Duke's Glorious Gliders

I have one wonderful 4 month old boy for sale 100.00 and I have a non-breeding pair to find a forever home for.

I guess I should start by telling you a little about me.  I have a small breeding program consisting of only three breeding pairs.  I saw a sugar glider on Animal Planet and I instantly knew I had to have one.  I did a bunch of research and decided I wanted to nurture my love for animals and breed sugar gliders.  The joy I have received has grown into a business, which I'm sure
you can tell from the home page!

I was only going to have one pair of gliders until I had the fortunate opportunity to rescue a family of gliders. The family consisted of the mom, dad the their twin boys. One of the twin boys was very sick and vet only gave him a few hours.  Against all odds he is now nine months old, a newlywed, and the sweetest boy ever.  I lost the mom about a week after she came to me so I purchased a new female for him to make my third breeding pair.

I feel I have a special connection with animals making it easy for me to interact and relate to them.  In turn, the babies I have raised are sweet, loving and very trusting.  You may have to be on a waiting list...but I can guarantee a great pet for life.

my gliders are $200 each. Please e-mail me or call (913) 481-7769 for availability.

Well, I hope you enjoy the rest of my site.  I have some recipes, food lists, pictures, babies for sale

*Don't forget to stop at the glider shop for all your glider needs*

Basic Glider Information
Sugar Gliders are native to New Guinea, Australia and Indonesia.  They are nocturnal marsupials which means they sleep during the day and have their babies in pouches.  There average life span, in captivity, is 12-15 years. Adults average about 4 oz, and 5-6 inches long with a tail of equal length. They are very social animals within there colony, very territorial towards other colonies.  You and friends housed together would be  colony.  They need a lot of human attention, they are not an animal you purchase and just put in a cage to live.  It helps to get them a friend if you are not able to play and handle them every day.

Anatomy
It is very easy to tell a male from a female even at a very young age.  The males have a pompom on there tummy where the testicles are located.  Females have a slit for the pouch, not as easily visible.  When the males get a little older they will get a "bald spot" on top of their head where a scent gland is located.  If you have a male be careful of the pink string like
things (yes two), this is his penis.  The female normally caries two joeys at a time, since she has two uterus.  Sometimes only one gets Fertilized producing only one joey.

Health
You need to get a vet that treats exotic pets.  Wellness visits once a year is recommended.  You can go to sugarglider.net and read about health issues with gliders.

Housing
The minimum size cage for a single sugar glider should be 2'x 2'x 3' high. Glider love to run, jump and play so the taller the cage the better. Rectangular would also be better than square if you have a choice, making a farther distance they can glide across.  Make sure that the cage is PVC coated not galvanized, as they can cause urinary tract infections.  They need toys to play with and pouches to sleep in.  Check out the glider store for many fun choices.

Bonding and Playtime
You need to make sure and spend as much time with your joey when you first bring it home to make sure that it bonds well with you.  Take it everywhere with you, and keep it as close to your body as possible.  I have bonding pouches for inside your shirt for those first few weeks after you bring them
home.  I bra train my babies so they are use to climbing down your shirt when ever they need to feel safe.  After you have bonded with your new baby you don't have to hold them as much, they will miss it, because they love the attention.  You should try to handle and love them in their cage pouch at least once a day for and hour or so.  Every night you should let them out to play and interact with you outside of their cage, for at least another hour. They need the chance to run and jump in a bigger area  then their cage.

Diet
The fruits and veggies can be of what ever variety you wish, there are times when gliders may like one thing one day and not the next, and vice versa, so don't think they don't like something just because they didn't eat it, the one time you offered it.  The things to avoid with fruits are pits, DO NOT
feed the pots or seeds of apples, cherries, or peaches etc.  Use can use fresh or frozen, but DO NOT feed canned.

For Joeys that are under 8 weeks out of pouch, please use Joey BML or wambaroo. Young joeys up to 6 months oop may not eat as many fruits and veggies, and eat more mix.  This is not cause for concern, they are not ready for it yet. You can introduce them by offering them as finger treats.

For nursing and lactating mothers.  Stay with this plan, do not add or increase anything.  They will eat more BML if needed and less fruits and veggies.  I also feed them more superworms, you can increase by one or two.

If your glider has never been introduced to insects, it may seem like they do not like them, that is NOT the case.  Break one in half and squeeze it onto your finger and try it that way.  Keep trying they will start to eat them.  Insects are very important to their diet.

Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters (BML)
This diet plan is designed to include : the BML mix below, fruits, veggies, and insects each night.
Do Not feed this diet plan with another diet plan

  • 1/2 cup Honey, do not use honeycomb, raw unfiltered honey.  Most store-bought Honey is the one to use unless it uses one of the three words above.
  • 1 egg (boiled or scrambled; I hard boil mine)  The shell is  optional, if your blender does not break the shell down into miniscule pieces do not use it.  I break the egg down before putting it into the blender.
  • 1/4 cup Apple Juice, just the good old apple juice that you would drink. Not frozen, not baby juice.
  • Blend well, turn off blender and add the next group of    ingredients.
  • 1 (4oz) bottle premixed Gerber juice with yogurt (mixed fruit or banana) you may have to check your local store; some do not carry this product.  I buy mine at Price
Chopper.  If you still can't find it you may substitute 2 oz plain yogurt and 2 oz of mixed fruit juice.
  • 1 Teaspoon of Rep-Cal Herptivite vitamin supplement. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE this supplement. You can purchase it at the pet store or have them order it for you.
  • Blend well again, turn off blender, and add next group of ingredients.
  • 2 teaspoons Rep-Cal Calcium Supplement non-phosphorus with Vitamin D3 in it. I also buy this at the pet store.
  • 2 (2 1/2 oz) jar of stage 1 or 2 Heinz, Gerber, or Beechnut chicken baby food.  You can use either the chicken with gravy or the chicken with chicken
    broth.
  • 1/4 cup Wheat Germ.  I buy at the grocery store
  • 1/2 cup dry baby cereal.  Heinz or Gerber, rice or oatmeal, with or without fruit, your choice.
  • Blend well.  Pour into Tupperware bowl and freeze.   It should be the consistency of ice cream.
  • DO NOT mix in fruit and veggies in before freezing.

There are several ways to feed the BLM plan.  The one thing that is consistent, is that, it is designed to be fed with fruits, veggies and insects

The rule of thumb per glider is.
1 Tablespoon of the BML basic mix or wambaroo
1 Tablespoon of fruits
1 Tablespoon of veggies
Super worms or other form of protein
If they ate it all the first night add a little more the next night until they leave only a little bit.
